Making a top quality Kolinsky Sable brush.

1. Taking just the right amount of hair to fill the ferrule is indeed an art in itself and takes many months/years of practise. The hair in this picture has been dressed and 'topped & tailed' - the belly in just the right place. The size of brush head we are making dictates the length of hair we will select - there are usualy around 8 different lengths off a tail and contary to what most artists believe - we never cut the hair to make a brush. For example I would select a 12mm tail hair to make very small brushes and perhaps a 60mm tail hair to make a larger size ( 14,16,18) - this way the belly of the brush will be in the correct place .

2. Even though the hair has been dressed we still need a good eye to select any rogue
hairs and remove - this can be achieved by fanning out the hair.

3. On a pointed brush we need the belly in the exact position for water retention
and a good balance. With finger manipulation we can taper to a really fine symmetrical point.
The head is then pulled through the ferrule to the correct visible length out.
Again this is important as the whole performance of the brush relies on this.
