"I paint a variety of subjects but clearly, my passion is of the canine variety. I look to my own furry herd of 6 for inspiration and life drawing.

I selectively exhibit as I am very active with my commission work of canine and wildlife portraits. The majority of my clients have been, interestingly enough, fellow artists. I have been very fortunate in receiving recognition for my portrait work and have been asked to exhibit at the National Arts Club and Portraits, Inc. in NYC as well as other high profile venues.

I give workshops with the unique feature of having live animals present. I believe that this is an extremely important element for keeping the paintings fresh. Painting from life is always a better option.

I am an active member of The Salmagundi Club in NYC and recently have been invited to paint with the prestigious Putney Painters in VT on a regular basis. This group, headed up by Richard Schmid, has been a major influence on me for the past 10 years. I have been honored to watch and paint with Mr. Schmid as well as his intimate group of fabulous painters. I also have my own group, The Third Floor Painters, which, oddly enough, meet in The Third Floor Studio!

For the past 7 years, I have been a very active Board Member of the Hamden Art League. Amongst several duties, I’ve most enjoyed booking the talent. The League has monthly demos covering all types of mediums and is considered a highlight of the organization’s offerings.

My art education has been self-directed working and studying with Kathy Anderson, Scott Burdick, Michelle Dunaway, Daniel J. Keys, Christine Lafuente, Sue Lyon, and Colley Whisson of Australia. In addition, I have hosted workshops with David Shevlino, Charlie Hunter and Stanley Bielen. I have studied extensively with Sherrie McGraw (drawing and painting) and consider her a valued mentor. Words cannot express my gratitude to her."

"I am often asked how I choose my brand and type of brush. I admit, initially, I was drawn to their simple beauty. But, could their good looks hold up to my particular use? I’ve tried most of their other collections and I always come across new favorites. However, some favorites remain my mainstays. The Masters and Eclipse seem to suit my needs perfectly with a few Evergreens thrown in. I might supplement with others, such as Sables, but these remain the constants. I’m sure other brands can do the job but, for me, I’m buying so much more than a brush. It’s who’s behind the brush and the care and love put in it. When I’m in the studio or the field brush selection is as much a ritual as laying out my palette. Oh, and make them mostly Filberts please. I’ve never lost that first love." Johanne Mangi, 2018.
