Suzie Baker 'grab And Go' Plein Air Brush Set

Here are some of the primary ways I use these brushes and demonstrate their use in my workshops:

Ultimate Bristle Filbert / Series 2065. Chungking Extra Long Filbert

These hog bristle brushes are the work horses of my brush folio. They are the first brushes I reach for when applying a tone to my blank canvas and block in the big dark shapes to establish the composition. They apply paint in a scratchy “giveth and taketh away” manner that is particularly sought after in transparent dark passages. They are also helpful for skipping paint along a surface in a dry brush technique.

Classic Egbert

This versatile brush can be used to scrub all manner of organic shapes, clouds, skies, trees, etc. I use my old splayed ones like a mop with soupy paint to achieve expressive skies/clouds or shapes whose form benefits from a haphazard stroke.

Ivory Long Flats

The Ivory Long synthetic brushes are easy to clean with just the right amount of rigidity and spring to be one of the most versatile brushes in my lineup. A great brush for painting man-made structures and doing color square assignments. They can hold and smoothly apply thick, opaque paint.

Ivory Dagger

One of my all-time favorite brushes. Need a straight line? Use a dagger. Need a point? Use a dagger. Need a flat shape with a straight edge? You get the idea. This brush is super versatile, doing the job of many other brushes.

Ivory Short Flats

I reach for this brush when painting architectural or man-made structures with straight lines and corners, fences, windows, roofs, boats, etc

Ivory Extra Long Flat

Great drawing brushes in the easy-to-clean and control Ivory series.

Ivory Pointed Round

Details, details, details.

Series 95. Pure Sable Fan

I don’t use this brush often, but I keep it in my kit for those times when thick paint creates unwanted glare from light bouncing off its ridges. Lightly dragging this brush downward across the ridges knocks out the glare while maintaining the chunky nature of the original stroke.

Teardrop Palette Knife

At least one clean and unbent palette knife is a necessity in any set. I use palette knives to mix and move paint and apply skipping passages of color to add variety and texture to my brushwork.
