Ruth has been fascinated by portraiture since her mid-teens. She taught herself to paint in oils while also studying for a BA in Music, and on graduating began painting full-time. Since then, Ruth’s paintings have gathered praise across the globe. Recent awards include a Purchase Award from the Art Renewal Center (2021) and 1st Place Young Artist award with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2020).

Ruth has exhibited at Sotheby’s NYC, Arcadia Contemporary NYC, MEAM Barcelona, the Mall Galleries London, and is represented by Fine Art Commissions, London.

Ruth’s painting “Things Not Seen” has been selected by the Art Renewal Center for the Lunar Codex cultural time-capsule project; in 2022 a copy of the painting will be sent to the Moon.

“My work is almost always figurative; it is humanity, facial expression, and body language which spark my imagination. I want to communicate, and I always strive for a strong narrative element in my paintings. Inspirations include the work of pre-Raphaelite and naturalist painters (Waterhouse, Bastien-LePage, Friant).

I am passionate about painting from life – I’m drawn to the organic experience of capturing my immediate reality in paint. This passion is balanced by a keen curiosity regarding texture, layers, and edges. I constantly seek the most imaginative ways to make paint replicate the feel and character of what I see. Quick, immersive live studies are generally followed by extensive studio work.”

This brush set contains the 12 brushes I couldn’t do without. Whether for alla prima portraits, plein air work, or for building up textures in my studio work, these brushes are the ones I reach for time after time.

Series 3077: These are my must-have brushes. They load up with paint brilliantly and create beautiful organic textures. Use them for scrubbing in an ebauche or laying on impastos. The size 2 is my all-time favourite brush.

Ivory Long Flats: An excellent staple. Great for preliminary drawing, and for creating sharp edges where necessary.

Red Dot Designers: There’s more to these brushes than meets the eye! Use them for fine detail work when new... then when they’ve been worn in, load them up with plenty of paint and their softness allows for expressive wet-on-wet brushwork.

Series 308 Hog: It’s always good to have a big brush.

Masters Choice Fan: Perfect for knocking back those textural brush-strokes causing reflective glare in the wrong places."
