S.m. Chavez Alternate Studio Set

Native New Mexican artist Sean Michael Chavez (S.M. Chavez) paints a singular, contemplative vision that bridges tradition and innovation. Rooted in the legacy of the Taos Society of Artists yet shaped by a contemporary sensibility, his work is defined by structure, atmosphere, and restraint—where design and emotion meet in tandem.

At the core of Chavez’s practice is an economy of means. Much of his work is built with a single flat brush, chosen for its clarity and versatility. Its edge moves seamlessly between line and mass—establishing form, carving space, and revealing the quiet scaffolding that organises each composition. This underlying structure has become a hallmark of his painting.

Working with deliberate restraint, Chavez resolves passages in as few marks as possible, each stroke carrying weight, direction, and atmosphere at once. Chavez’s work has established strong and sustained demand within contemporary Western art, marked by a meteoric rise in critical visibility and collector interest. He has exhibited in leading museum and institutional shows nationwide, including Albuquerque Museum of Art, Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, Booth Western Art Museum (museum purchase 2024), Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Couse-Sharp Historic Site, and Briscoe Western Art Museum (museum purchase 2025). He is a recipient of recognition at the Coors Western Art Show (2024) and made his debut at Prix de West (2025) at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
