Kimberly Santini Set
SP = Smart Points
Animal-shaped vessels holding fragments of landscape speak to generations of memory and space, told from a non-human viewpoint. This is the distinctive work of painter Kimberly Kelly Santini.
“I have always felt more in tune with animal companions than humans,” she says, and that is apparent in her art. A daily painter since 2006, Santini weaves fragments of her dreams into natural elements pulled from everyday experiences, then gently cradles them inside the cavity of a four-legged vessel. A rabbit-shaped snowglobe holds the birth of spring while sitting inside a wintry woodscape. A skyhole pocked fox exhales dancing golden gingko leaves. Her animals are otherworldly, looking at the viewer with a deep awareness while whispering their narrative.
Santini uses intuitive, direct painting, infusing her art practice with joy and intention. She is a generous instructor, leading students (online and in person) on mastering technique, along with identifying and discovering ways to make art that feels relevant and distinctively their own. Her work is uniquely recognisable and eagerly collected worldwide, garnering many honours and awards over the years, including a commission as the official artist of the 2015 Kentucky Derby.
In addition to daily painting from her home studio for over 25 years, Santini runs an online student membership, is part of an intimate critique group with a 40-year history, and is a voracious reader who cultivates dahlias, zinnias and heirloom roses. She calls the thumb area of Michigan home, where she, her husband and menagerie of rescue pets live just close enough to their adult children and extended family.
The spring in the Evergreen. Long Flats adds energy to brushwork. Their crisp edges work well for chunky marks, sweeping gestural shapes, dancing linework, and precise negative space painting. The longer handles allow for a variety of grips and movement while working, further expanding the versatility of this brush and making it perfect for pet portraiture and the varied textural painting animals demand.
The bounce on this brush is extraordinarily well-suited for whiskers and the rogue highlight on wispy hair. It also creates sensual linework, including signatures.
These brushes are great partners in creating line work alongside the chunkier shapes created by the long flats. The pairing allows for an interesting conversation in differences.
This brush creates soft marks perfectly suited for softer, curlier fur. It's also useful for blending and creating organic, less structured marks.
