René Snyman Set

René Snyman, a professional artist based in Sir Lowry’s Pass, Western Cape, South Africa, draws profound inspiration from her Kalahari upbringing. Her early life on a farm in the desert fostered a remarkable capacity for intimate observation of nature.

René’s paintings delve into the intricate dance of light on diverse surfaces and the interplay of color temperatures. Her art is deeply personal, stemming from her childhood, daily experiences, and the natural world. She focuses on nature and people that allow for close, personal connection, and farm animals she has known and loved since her youth.

For René, art is about uncovering deeper truths. She states, "In order to understand and appreciate my work, someone shouldn’t try to find out what the subject/object is all about, but for what it communicates, in other words, what message it has.” The core of her artistic expression is intimacy. She explains, "This would be the one word to describe my paintings – "Intimacy" with the landscape, figures and the animals I portray. Everything that has a story to tell and has the element of life captures my attention.”

Her artistic mission is to highlight the beauty of creation through “in-your-face” compositions, presenting nature not as a distant entity but as an immediate, immersive experience. She fills her canvases with subjects to compel viewers to see creation in a new, close-up perspective. This approach is profoundly shaped by her childhood experience with poor eyesight, which led her to perceive the world in intricate detail from ground level, as distant objects remained out of focus. This personal history influences her desire for her subjects to "tower above me and be right up front."

René believes that meaningful stories unfold in close proximity. Her work is intentionally interpersonal and interactive, designed to foster a direct connection with the viewer. Upon completion, she allows her art to fulfil its purpose: "to bless others, to feed their hunger for beauty, truth and to communicate something of God that must change their lives." For René, understanding her work means looking beyond the subject itself to grasp the message it conveys.
